The artist: Jean Roulland (1931-2021), born in Croix in the North, a figure of the Roubaix Group. Self-taught sculptor in the lost-wax technique, he personally produced the initial casts of his bronzes. He received the Rodin Prize and the Lenchener Prize in Paris in 1972, then the Special Prize at the 1st Kotaro Takamura Grand Prize in Hakone (Japan) in 1981. In 2010, the Académie des beaux-arts awarded him the Maria Pilar de la Béraudière Sculpture Prize, in memory of Paul-Louis Weiller. His work, figurative and frontal, concentrates on the face and bust — the Hippocrates subject is among his most sought-after series, regularly circulating in French and Belgian auction rooms.
