# About Karl Lagasse
Born in Paris on **4 April 1981**, Karl Lagasse is a French artist renowned for his work in painting and sculpture.
He is notably the author of the famous sculpture **One Dollar** and the creator of the official trophy for the **43rd edition of the Deauville American Film Festival**.
---
## Artistic career
Karl Lagasse's professional career begins very early. In **1996**, at age fifteen, he sells his first work in **Antwerp**, marking the beginning of his artistic journey.
In **2003**, he prepares his first Paris exhibition. The works he presents there combine collage and painting, an approach developed following the advice of **Yvaral Vasarely**, encountered in 1998. Son of the famous artist **Victor Vasarely**, Yvaral encourages him to explore this combination of techniques.
From **2004**, Karl Lagasse also dedicates himself to sculpture. Inspired by *White Nights*, he undertakes a personal artistic research leading to the birth of the series **“Buildings”**, composed of totem sculptures made from varied materials.
That same year, he leaves Paris to settle in **Normandy**, where he continues the development of his work.
---
## Early exhibitions
In **2006**, the prestigious **Isy Brachot Gallery** in Brussels devotes a solo exhibition to him. All the works are acquired except for a single painting, which the artist later offers to a collector who ultimately cannot purchase it.
In **2008**, Karl Lagasse returns to Paris to exhibit at the **Espace Pierre Cardin**. This exhibition brings together paintings, sculptures and photographs, while a film devoted to the creation process of his works is also shown to the public.
---
## The emblematic work “One Dollar”
The year **2009** marks the creation of **One Dollar**, one of Karl Lagasse's most representative works.
Inspired by his admiration for the United States, this sculpture also conveys the idea that a single monetary unit can become the starting point of an artistic creation. Through this work, the artist develops the concept of **“Make art with just one dollar”**, which has become one of the symbols of his creative approach.
