Antique French Briar Smoking Pipe – Hand-Carved "Three Fauns," Saint-Claude, Horn Stem
Description:
A large, hand-carved briar tobacco pipe from Saint-Claude, France — historically known as the pipe-making capital of France. The bowl is carved in the round with three faun (satyr) heads worked in high relief around the body: one to each side and one facing front, emerging from the rough, bark-textured briar in a rustic, expressive freehand style typical of the figural "sculpté" pipes produced by Saint-Claude workshops in the first half of the 20th century.
The shank is stamped "St Claude" with a second maker's mark that is worn and only partly legible. The pipe is fitted with a horn stem, slightly curved, attached via a brass/nickel ferrule.

Condition: Good antique/estate condition overall, with an attractive aged patina to the briar. One of the three faun heads has lost a small carved element — visible as a lighter, exposed patch of wood with a small hole (see close-up photo) — likely where a protruding detail such as a muzzle has broken away over time. This is a surface/carving loss only and does not appear to affect the structural integrity of the bowl. Stem and ferrule are intact and well-fitted. No cracks visible in the briar.
