# About Karl Lagasse

Born in Paris on **April 4, 1981**, Karl Lagasse is a French artist renowned for his work in painting and sculpture.

He is notably the author of the famous sculpture **One Dollar** as well as the official trophy of the **43rd American Movie Festival of Deauville**.

---

## Artistic journey

Karl Lagasse began his career very young. In **1996**, at only fifteen years old, he sold his first work in **Antwerp**, marking the start of his professional path.

In **2003**, he prepared his first exhibition in Paris. At that time, he developed a body of work combining collage and painting, an artistic direction encouraged by **Yvaral Vasarely**, whom he met in 1998. Son of the famous artist **Victor Vasarely**, Yvaral urged him to explore this combination of techniques.

In **2004**, Karl Lagasse turned to sculpture after drawing inspiration from the film *Nuits Blanches*. He then undertook a personal artistic research that led to the creation of the series **« Buildings »**, consisting of totem sculptures mixing different materials.

That same year, he left Paris to settle in **Normandy**, where he continued to develop his work.

---

## Early exhibitions

In **2006**, the prestigious **Galerie Isy Brachot** in Brussels held a solo show for him. All works found buyers except one painting, which the artist later offered to a collector who ultimately could not acquire it.

In **2008**, he returned to Paris to exhibit at the **Espace Pierre Cardin**. This exhibition brought together paintings, sculptures and photographs, while a film dedicated to the creation process of his works was shown to the public.

---

## Iconic works

The year **2009** marks the birth of one of his most famous creations: **One Dollar**.

This sculpture, inspired by his admiration for the United States, also expresses the idea that it is possible to create a work of art from a single dollar, according to the principle: **“Make art with 1 $”**.

---

## Commissions and international recognition

In **2010**, Karl Lagasse was chosen to represent the city of **Deauville** at the world championship **Horsemania**, held in **Lexington (USA)**, a city twinned with the Norman seaside resort. On that occasion, he created a sculpture specially designed for the event.

Following the international success of **One Dollar**, he presented a new major creation: **Cryptogram One**.

This work was unveiled to the public at the **Art Monaco 2011** fair, where it quickly became one of the most representative pieces of his artistic universe.

---

## Cannes Film Festival

On the occasion of the **65th Cannes Film Festival** in **2012**, Karl Lagasse created a monumental sculpture from the **Buildings** series, measuring about **2.80 meters tall** and **60 centimeters wide**.

Made of cement, wood, glass and photographs, this work was produced in collaboration with **Corbis** and presented at the **Carlton Cinema Club**.

Artists invited to the Festival were invited to sign the sculpture and leave a message. Among them were:

* José Garcia
* Michel Hazanavicius
* Bérénice Bejo
* Gad Elmaleh
* Cuba Gooding Jr.
* Tim Roth
* Matthew McConaughey
* Zac Efron

This creation today stands as one of the landmark achievements in Karl Lagasse's international career.
