# About Karl Lagasse

Karl Lagasse is a French contemporary artist whose sculptures and mixed-media works have earned international recognition.

His career took a decisive step in **2009** with his famous **One Dollar** series, which earned him a place among the ten best sculptors under thirty according to **Artprice**.

In **2012**, the New York publishing house **Farameh** included him among the fifty contemporary artists featured in the book *FOR WHICH IT STANDS: Americana in Contemporary Art*, dedicated to creators inspired by emblematic symbols of the United States.

During **Art Paris Art Fair 2016**, his imposing bronze sculpture **One Dollar**, two meters tall and exhibited at the Grand Palais, received congratulations from the President of the French Republic.

## Artistic path

Karl Lagasse began creating at a very young age. At seven, he made his first collages after a decisive encounter with the sculptor **César Baldaccini**.

Subsequently, he explored the world of graffiti and tagging in the Paris metro while continuing his collage research. Encouraged by **Yvaral Vasarely**, he developed an approach that fused these two disciplines, which would become a signature of his work.

In **2003**, he prepared his first Paris exhibition, before presenting his first solo show in **2006** at the **Galerie Isy Brachot** in Brussels.

In **2008**, he exhibited at the **Espace Pierre Cardin** in Paris a selection of paintings, sculptures, and video installations.

In **2011**, he was represented by **Bel Air Fine Art** at the **Art Monaco** fair, where he unveiled his work **Cryptogram One**.

## Public commissions and major achievements

In **2010**, Karl Lagasse was chosen to represent **Deauville** at the world horse championship **Horsemania** in Lexington, United States, where he created a horse sculpture specifically for the event.

In **2012**, he donated the bronze sculpture **Cryptogram One** to the town of Deauville, installed at the town entrance as a symbol of peace and love.

That same year, in partnership with **Corbis**, he designed a monumental sculpture for the **Cannes Film Festival**, made from photographs covering the period 1945 to 2011 and signed by several personalities, including **Alexandra Lamy** and **Matthew McConaughey**.

The fame gained through the **One Dollar** series also earned him recognition by Artprice among the ten best sculptors worldwide under thirty.

## Creation of the Deauville American Film Festival trophies

In **2017**, Karl Lagasse was commissioned to design the trophies for the **43rd edition of the Deauville American Film Festival**.

Inspired by his work **Cryptogram One**, these trophies in mirror-finished aluminum castings bear inscriptions such as **“Hope”**, **“7e Art”**, and **“Deauville”** on their various faces.

For the **46th edition** of the festival in 2020, a new commission entrusted to him was to create a trophy inspired by the iconic drawing of the Deauville Planches barriers.

## Monumental installations

In **2016**, **France Culture** highlighted his monumental installation **A Piece of Heaven on Earth**, unveiled at the **Art Paris Art Fair 2015** in partnership with **Maserati**.

This work combines a Maserati covered with a white veil, a statue of Jesus, and several dollar-shaped sculptures to provoke reflection on human debt.

In **2017**, Karl Lagasse also created the trophies for the Deauville American Film Festival, echoing the aesthetic of **Cryptogram One**, enriched with the inscriptions **“Hope”** and **“7e Art”**.
