With this square-format work, Medsan dresses Pikachu, the global mascot of Pokémon, in all the golden finery of Gustav Klimt and his Golden Period, between Vienna Secession Art Nouveau and Japanese-inspired refinement.

The treatment overflows with gold: gold leaf, silver drips, mosaics of colored squares that compose the creature's fur, in the manner of The Kiss or the Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer. Around the joyful figure radiate stylized lightning bolts, spirals, chrysanthemums and cloud motifs inspired by prints, all framed in an ornate Art Deco surround. The cartouche メドサン signs the work.

The piece transforms the popular icon into a Byzantine treasure, a precious object of devotion. By applying Klimt’s sumptuous decorativeism to a cartoon character, Medsan questions our cult of modern idols and deliciously blurs the boundary between refined art and pop culture.
