With this square-format work, Medsan depicts R2-D2, Star Wars’ beloved droid, in the pared-down language of sumi-e, the Japanese ink painting, springing from a traditional teapot to fall into a bowl of tea.

The treatment embraces all the spontaneity of the wash: kyusu teapot sketched in a few bold, ink-laden brushstrokes, a spray of cobalt-blue water projected as free splashes, whites left to breathe on the paper. The astromech, captured in mid-fall at the heart of the whirlpool, seems to have sprung from the ink itself, its mechanical details treated with the same economy of means as the Zen masters of zenga. The cartouche メドサン signs the work.

The piece fuses the meditative minimalism of Japanese art with the imaginarium of science fiction. This absurd, poetic moment — a robot poured like tea — exudes an unexpected serenity, inviting contemplation of gesture and emptiness, in the purest tradition of sumi-e.
