Visch studied graphic art from 1968 to 1972 at the Royal Academy of Art and Design in Den Bosch.
From 1974 to 1982 he worked in Boxtel, where he made drawings and etchings. He worked from 1982 to 1983 at PS 1 in New York. From 1983 onward Visch became best known for his sculptures, which he exhibited at De Fabriek in Eindhoven and later at the Amsterdam gallery The Livingroom. In 1984 he worked at the Ateliers Internationales de Fontevraud-l'Abbaye in France, invited by the FRAC.
From 1984 to 1987 Henk Visch was a lecturer at the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten in Amsterdam and from 1987 to 1991 at the Maastricht Jan van Eyck Academie. From 1995 to 2001 he was Professor at the Staatliche Akademie der Bildende Künste in Stuttgart and from 2005 at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste in Münster. In the summer of 2013 Visch was a guest lecturer at the Central Academy of Fine Art (CAFA) in Beijing.
In 1988 he represented the Netherlands at the Venice Biennale, in 1991 he received the Art Prize of the City of Darmstadt and in 1992 he was invited to participate in documenta IX in Kassel. He received the Beeldende Kunstprijs 2001 from the Noord-Brabant branch of the Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds. From 1996 to 2011 Visch drew every Monday for the Mirza column in de Volkskrant. In 2018 he was awarded the Jeanne Oosting Prize in the category Watercolor.
