Otto Piene was a significant German artist of the postwar era and co-founder of the **ZERO-Gruppe** (1957) together with Heinz Mack and Günther Uecker. The ZERO movement stands for **renewal, light art, kinetic art, Op Art, reduction, movement and spatial effect**. Piene worked intensively with **light installations, grid structures, fire paintings (Fire Paintings), smoke drawings (Smoke Drawings)** and later with **Sky Art and air sculptures**. Together with Mack and Uecker he developed an art of **immateriality, dynamics and perception**, which consciously differentiated itself from Informal and traditional painting and instead relied on **light, energy, time and technology**.
