GOVANNI GRECO was born in Catania, a city where he lives and works. After unfinished studies in biology and further exploration of artistic studies, he enrolled at the Scuola del Nudi in Catania and in 1980 began his painting activity, starting simultaneously from the Magrittean example and later from De Chirico, where it was possible to resolve two seemingly contradictory layers—the dream and objective reality—in a kind of absolute reality.
At the base of his research lies a strong drive aimed at solving the great dilemmas of existence and the relationship between self and world, trying to interpret the “thought” as it sometimes presents incontrovertible passages—the work of the artist Giovanni Greco, ineffable as a means to bring to light anew the fundamental problems our mind cannot stop freeing itself from, staging visual rackets, rackets of the soul; later he is drawn to metaphysical painting, mainly to the works of G. De Chirico, not so much for stylistic choices as for the substantive interest they express in a solid compositional framework; objects, figures, and even space themselves become powerful masses given by dark, rich chromatic volumes in a context where time appears to be halted and the subjects suspended between metaphysical influence and neoclassical echoes drawn from past works, shaken by time, in a world unknown.
It is the world of the “ëndonèxò,” a term coined by the artist—(éndon-éxò)—where the gaze is clearly directed toward itself and into things, but at the same time conveys his desire to make his painting feel closer to the observer’s lived experience, drawing up from the depths of the soul and gradually replacing, with new dark forces, the clear and simple spaces of reason.
