The work traces the campaign of the Army of the East (the army of General Charles Denis Bourbaki) during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-1871. It describes in particular:
- the battles of La Bourgonce, Rambervillers, Dijon, Villersexel and Héricourt;
- the logistical difficulties and the retreat toward the Swiss border;
- the internment of the army in Switzerland in February 1871.
This work is now considered a classic source on the campaign of the Army of the East. It is sought after for both its text and the numerous illustrations by Louis Bombled. A facsimile reprint has also been published from the digitization of the Bibliothèque nationale de France.
