Description from the seller
Yves Saint Laurent (1936–2008)
“Ballet de Jean Anouilh et Roland Petit” – Le Petit Valet · Le Diable Amoureux · La Jeune Femme
Limited Offset Lithograph – Seido Paris – Edition 32/300
After a design by Yves Saint Laurent, published in France by Seido Paris.
Only a few artists of the 20th century have fused fashion, theater and visual art with such naturalness and elegance as Yves Saint Laurent. Beyond his legendary haute couture collections, his great passion was theater, opera and especially ballet. His stage and costume designs are today among the most poetic and at the same time rare testimonies of his artistic work.
The present work brings together several costume designs from the “Ballet de Jean Anouilh et Roland Petit” and shows the figures “Le Petit Valet”, “Le Diable Amoureux” and “La Jeune Femme.” With a few masterfully placed lines, Saint Laurent succeeds in capturing movement, elegance and character. The reduced color palette, the fine ink drawings and the subtle colored accents give the composition an extraordinary lightness and timeless refinement.
This very ability to achieve maximum expressive power with minimal means makes Yves Saint Laurent’s fashion drawings icons of French design. The sheet vividly documents the creative process of one of the 20th century’s most important couturiers and conveys the atmosphere of a Paris atelier where fashion and stage art blend into an inseparable unit.
This edition is especially sought-after due to its small edition size of only 300 copies. The present exemplar bears the early edition number 32/300 and carries the embossed blind stamp “Seido Paris,” which authenticates the exclusivity of this limited edition.
While Yves Saint Laurent is revered worldwide as the epitome of French haute couture, his graphic works — in particular his theater- and ballet-inspired designs — appear only rarely on the international art market. They fuse fashion history, stage art and decorative graphics at the highest level and count among the most elegant collectibles of their genre.
