Description from the seller
Item Description
This lot consists of a set of two kōgō (incense containers) of contrasting character.
The first is a kōgō made from a natural shell, constructed so that the shell's own seam serves as the opening mechanism. The exterior is hand-painted with stylized chrysanthemum motifs in gold leaf decoration and green lacquer, while the interior of the lid is finished in lustrous gold foil. One side of the shell shows a natural crack, which is typical of this type of shellwork and does not affect the opening and closing mechanism.
The second is a small ceramic kōgō with a rounded, flaring form and a pointed tip. It is decorated with concentric horizontal bands of mustard yellow, black, and warm ochre glazes, with the tip finished in green glaze. The foot rim is unglazed, revealing the reddish stoneware clay body beneath.
Together, the two pieces form an appealing small display group, well suited to an interior evoking the world of the tea ceremony or to a collection of Japanese decorative art.
Dimensions
Height: 4.5 cm
Width: 8.5 cm
Depth: 7.5 cm
Weight
167 g
Condition
The shell kōgō shows a natural crack on one side, inherent to the nature of the shell material, though the hinge and opening mechanism remain fully functional. The gilt and painted decoration shows minor age-related wear consistent with use. The ceramic kōgō is in generally good condition, with only minor wear to the glaze surface from age and handling. Both pieces have been assessed by visual inspection only.
