Arare 霰 (あられ)｜Akiyama Iwao 秋山巌 (あきやまいわお)

This is a work from the series based on the haiku poems of Taneda Santoka by Akiyama Iwao.
The poem carved into the work reads "Teppatsu no naka he mo arare". Teppatsu refers to an iron or beggar's bowl held by mendicant monks to receive alms (rice or money).
Santoka led a life of begging journey called "gyokotsu". This poem depicts a scene where, as he stood waiting for alms in the freezing cold of winter, hail fell relentlessly from the sky and bounced into his precious iron bowl.
A red-eyed crow is depicted on the screen, creating a lyrical and familiar composition.

Artist Profile:
Born in Oita Prefecture in 1921.
Widely known for woodblock prints featuring haiku by the wandering poet Taneda Santoka.
Held numerous solo exhibitions in Japan and abroad, and gained popularity with a warm style depicting owls, cats, and Buddhas as motifs.
Passed away in 2014.
