Description from the seller

"Vermeer Noir" is an apt description of the intriguing work by the Dutch photographer Erwin Olaf. His figures are posed indoors, still and lit by natural window light, yet surrounded by a mood of distance and estrangement. The carefully styled interiors and rich colors turn the characters into almost mannequin-like apparitions.

In the series Hope, Grief and Rain, Olaf blends influences from mid-century modern style and film noir with contemporary fashion photography. His images evoke a nostalgic America of the 1950s and 1960s while exploring themes of loss, loneliness and quiet despair. The tension between beauty and estrangement forms the essence of his work. The book comes with a DVD.

Erwin Olaf (1959–2023) was an internationally renowned Dutch photographer, known for his meticulously staged photography in which every detail was carefully orchestrated. Themes such as beauty, sexuality, identity and transience played an important role in his work. He gained worldwide recognition and, among other things, created portraits of the Dutch royal family.
