Description from the seller

This catalog was published in a limited edition of only 3,000 copies and has long since sold out. As a result, this edition is offered only rarely nowadays.

The publication focuses on Erwin Olaf's iconic series Rain (2004) and Hope (2005), in which he explores a stylized, stereotypical image of America.

In carefully staged, colorful settings, figures such as scouts, cheerleaders and housewives appear, whose apathetic gazes evoke a sense of estrangement and unease. The series include staged photographs, portraits and video works, and show the development of Olaf's visual language: from the narrative influence of American painters such as Edward Hopper and Norman Rockwell to his own unmistakable style, in which beauty and threat come together in a striking manner.

Erwin Olaf (1959–2023) was an internationally renowned Dutch photographer, known for his meticulously staged photography in which every detail was precisely orchestrated. Themes such as beauty, sexuality, identity and impermanence played an important role in his work. He gained worldwide recognition and, among other achievements, photographed the Dutch royal family.
