Erwin Olaf is one of the Netherlands' best-known contemporary photographers. His work can be categorized as staged photography.
In 1988 he created the series 'Chessmen', which is about the intriguing and refined game played by nasty, violent characters. Olaf used the chess game as a metaphor for the power struggle between people, both in general and in a sexual sense.
Erwin Olaf (1959–2023) was an internationally renowned Dutch photographer, known for his meticulously staged photography in which every detail was carefully directed. Themes such as beauty, sexuality, identity and transience played an important role in his work. He gained worldwide recognition and produced, among others, portraits of the Dutch royal family.
