Markus Lüpertz is among the outstanding German artists of the postwar period and is regarded as an important representative of the so-called Neue Wilde (New Fauves) or German Neo-Expressionism. He had already developed in the 1960s an independent, consciously simplified and expressive visual language. 

His extensive overall oeuvre includes painting as well as drawing, printmaking, sculpture, stage design and poetry.

Music also plays a special role in Lüpertz’s life. He has been engaged with free jazz for many years and plays the piano himself. The piano motif thus has personal as well as artistic significance in this work.
