Ennio Calabria (Tripoli, March 7, 1937 – Rome, March 1, 2024) was an Italian painter and illustrator.

Born in Tripoli on March 7, 1937, Ennio Calabria was an Italian artist and intellectual, representative of European figurativism.[2][3] He worked as an illustrator of stories, book covers, poetry collections, and posters.[4][5]

In 1958 he held his first solo exhibition at Galleria La Feluca in Rome.[6][7] In 1959 he participated in the VIII Rome Quadriennale exhibitions. Following this first participation were the exhibitions of 1972, 1986 and 1999.[8]

In 1961 he belonged to the circle of artists (Renzo Vespignani, Ugo Attardi, Fernando Farulli, Piero Guccione and Alberto Gianquinto), who together with art critics Antonio Del Guercio, Dario Micacchi and Morosini founded the group Il pro e il contro, a touchstone of research in the field of figurative painting.[10]

In 1963 a work of his was shown in the exhibition Contemporary Italian Paintings, arranged in several Australian cities.[11] In 1963-1964 he took part in the exhibition Peintures italiennes d'aujourd'hui, organized in the Middle East and North Africa.[12] In 1964 he participated in the Venice Biennale.[13]

His first retrospective took place in 1985 in Milan, at Rotonda della Besana[14]; a second followed in 1987 in Rome, at Castel Sant’Angelo.[15] Around the same time a monograph appeared in Milan from the publisher Vangelista, edited by Carandente and Mario De Micheli[16], later in a second edition with the additional contribution of art critic Dario Micacchi.[17]

In 2008 he organized the solo exhibition La luce e la forma at Galleria Granelli in Livorno[18] and in 2009 the solo exhibition La forma da dentro at Fondazione Luciana Matalon in Milan[19], later again at Villa Paolina Bonaparte in Viareggio.[20]

In 2015 he again participated in the Venice Biennale, in the national pavilion of Guatemala Sweet Death.[21]

In 2018 he was awarded a comprehensive retrospective at Palazzo Cipolla in Rome: Ennio Calabria. Verso il tempo dell'essere. Opere 1958-2018, curated by Gabriele Simongini.[22]

He died in Rome on March 1, 2024, six days before his 87th birthday.[1]
