Features of Satsuma plates
Material and glaze: The pottery has an ivory- or cream-colored hue. The glaze almost always contains a fine network of cracks (craquelé), which is characteristic of this style.
Subjects: The paintings often depict Japanese scenes, such as emperors, warriors, geishas, flowers, or landscapes.
The style is named after the Japanese province of Satsuma. Many of the antique plates you now find come from the Meiji era (roughly 1868 to 1912).
