Description from the seller
RETRATO HAWAiano is a 70x100 cm painting by contemporary artist Ernest García. A young woman appears in profile, surrounded by lush tropical vegetation that turns the portrait into a scene with strong decorative power. A pink lily flower crowns her dark hair, while the large circular earrings and the serene expression reinforce the elegant and ceremonial character of the figure. The subject does not look directly at the viewer, which gives the portrait a sense of distance, mystery, and inner concentration.
The composition is built from intense, contrasted colors: deep greens, electric blues, coral pinks, and warm golden tones. This free, emotional use of color places the work in a sensibility close to fauvism and figurative expressionism, with echoes of Henri Matisse in the simplification of forms, the ornamental presence of leaves, and the union between figure and background. It can also be related to Paul Gauguin’s exotic and symbolic vision, especially for the combination of female portrait, tropical nature, and non-naturalistic color.
The dark lines that define the face, hair, and botanical elements give a strong graphic, contemporary character. The background does not simply function as a landscape, but as an extension of the protagonist’s emotional state: blue and coral leaves envelop her, creating a dense, sensuous, and almost theatrical atmosphere.
Hawaiian Portrait revisits the female portrait from a coloristic, ornamental, and modern perspective. The work celebrates beauty, identity, and the symbolic strength of tropical nature, transforming a serene figure into a visual icon full of energy and resonances from art history.
