Description from the seller
RETRATO ROJO is a 70x100 cm painting by contemporary artist Ernest García. A female figure dressed in red occupies the foreground with a serene and monumental presence. Seated in a chair with curved lines, the protagonist rests her face on one hand and gazes at the viewer, building an attitude of pause, contemplation, and a certain emotional distance. Around her, a large bouquet of white and blue flowers, a turquoise amphora, and several lemons complete a carefully organized interior.
The work is built from broad areas of flat color and very clearly defined black outlines. The intense red of the dress contrasts with the dark background, the deep blues, and the bright tones of the flowers, creating a composition with strong graphic force. This treatment of color and the simplification of forms recall Fauvism, figurative expressionism, and the decorative tradition of Henri Matisse, especially his female portraits and interiors filled with patterns, still lifes, and ornamental objects.
The presence of paintings within the painting itself introduces an interesting game of references to the history of representation. The small nude in the background recalls Amedeo Modigliani’s linear synthesis, while the main figure, reduced to essential profiles and chromatic fields, also dialogues with the visual clarity of modern figuration and with certain contemporary approaches close to Alex Katz.
Retrato rojo combines portrait, interior, and still life in a balanced and theatrical scene. The work celebrates the expressive power of color and transforms a domestic room into a space of identity, beauty, and contemplation, where the female figure seems to inhabit both the present and the memory of modern painting.
