Jan Wolkers (1925–2007) was a versatile Dutch writer, visual artist and sculptor. He became best known for his autobiographically tinged novels, in which love, sexuality, religion, nature and death often play an important role. As an artist he also made a name with sculptures, paintings and monumental works. His direct, personal and sometimes confrontational style made him one of the prominent Dutch artists and writers of the twentieth century.
