Description from the seller
Robert Capa (1913–1954) – Spanish Civil War, 1937.
Original vintage silver gelatin photograph – 12 × 18 cm
This original vintage silver gelatin photograph by Robert Capa captures one of the defining moments of the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939), the conflict that first established Capa as one of the world's greatest war photographers and laid the foundations of modern photojournalism.
The image depicts a Republican military column transporting a captured or disabled tankette, accompanied by artillery and troops moving along a forest road. The scene illustrates the logistical reality of the conflict, documenting the movement of captured enemy equipment behind the front lines. Rather than portraying combat itself, Capa records the aftermath of military operations with the humanistic and documentary approach that would become his hallmark.
What makes this print particularly remarkable is its exceptionally rare verso, bearing the scarce red rectangular stamp:
"ATELIER R. CAPA
37, Rue Froidevaux, 37
PARIS"
This is one of the earliest and least frequently encountered Robert Capa atelier stamps. It predates the creation of Magnum Photos and belongs to the period when Capa maintained his Paris studio before the Second World War. Original prints carrying this specific atelier stamp appear only occasionally on the international market and are considered significantly rarer than the later PIX or Magnum agency stamps.
The reverse also bears the red "PHOTO ROBERT CAPA" stamp together with the Foto Inform distribution mark, further reinforcing the editorial provenance of the photograph during the pre-war period.
For collectors of Robert Capa, the Spanish Civil War represents the most iconic and historically significant chapter of his career. Original vintage prints from this period are considerably scarcer than his later Second World War photographs and are among the most desirable works in the field of twentieth-century photojournalism.
The combination of:
Original Robert Capa vintage print.
Spanish Civil War subject.
Rare ATELIER R. CAPA – 37 Rue Froidevaux, Paris stamp.
Additional PHOTO ROBERT CAPA and Foto Inform provenance marks.
Original period silver gelatin print measuring 12 × 18 cm.
makes this an exceptionally attractive example for collectors of war photography, museum-quality archives and institutions specializing in the history of photojournalism.
This photograph represents not only an original work by one of the greatest photographers of the twentieth century, but also a rare surviving document from the conflict that defined Robert Capa's international reputation and forever transformed the visual language of war photography.
