Description from the seller
A woman descends alone a white staircase toward a sunlit cove. Immaculate swimsuit, scarf tied in her hair, basket in hand and towel on her arm: all evoking the Mediterranean summers of the 1950s and 1960s.
Below, a single striped deck chair awaits facing a sea of intense blue.
With Bonjour, Tristesse, Le Yack transforms an almost ideal summer scene into an introspective image. The solitary presence of the character and especially that of the empty chair introduce an ambiguity: is someone awaited? Has someone just left? Or is this empty space simply the one the woman chose to isolate herself from the world? This tension between apparent happiness and solitude echoes the world of Françoise Sagan and this Riviera that has become, in the collective imagination, the theater of passions, carefree living and disillusions.
The composition also plays on a succession of blues, mineral whites and sunlit ochers. The figure seen from behind invites the viewer's eye to descend with her toward the sea, giving the work the sensation of a vacation memory whose exact story one might have forgotten.
