Description from the seller
Four antique pipes, with bowl heads finely carved by hand in sea foam (meerschaum), a porous mineral traditionally worked in Turkey and Austria to make fine smoking accessories.
Block meerschaum is especially appreciated for its naturally porous structure, which absorbs moisture, tar and nicotine to offer a cooler, drier and smoother smoking experience. As the pipe is used over time, it gradually develops a rich golden patina, which increases its beauty and collectible value.
Because each pipe is entirely hand-carved from a single block of natural meerschaum, no piece is ever exactly the same as another. This uniqueness makes each specimen a distinctive collectible as well as a functional work of art.
the 4 pipes represent different subjects, in order of presentation in the photos we have
- the face of a historical Ottoman or Middle Eastern figure with turban and large mustache
- bearded face of Bacchus with a crown of leaves and grape clusters.
-bearded face of a historical figure or pioneer with a wide-brimmed hat.
- stylized male face with an elaborate headdress, in a style similar to the traditional Sicilian Moro heads.
items in excellent condition, slight signs of aging.
they have not been polished to avoid damaging the material
