Description from the seller
Atmospheric portrait of a lady, painted by Sjef van Schaijk (1901-1985)
Van Schaijk was born in 1901 in Ravenstein. His impoverished background and restive nature did not give him an easy life. Only with difficulty could he bind himself to a fixed job for a long period. All those years painting was his main occupation. Sjef van Schaijk was self-taught but soon established contact with other artists in the area, among whom Hendrik Wiegersma and Gerard Princèe are the best known. With the latter he shared a studio for several years and undertook study trips through Europe. In that period he became acquainted with the work of several of his contemporaries. He especially admired the Belgian surrealists such as Magritte and Delvaux and the Flemish expressionists such as Permeke. The majority of Van Schaijk’s work is surrealistic. Van Schaijk was not a painter who sought beauty or the aesthetic. Full of tension himself, he sought an outlet for his feelings and the Surrealists' method gave him that possibility.
