Description from the seller
Victorian Decorative Cigarette Box, circa 1850–1880
A fine Victorian-period wooden cigarette box of rectangular form, featuring an exceptionally decorative exterior with intricate marquetry and applied/engraved ornament.
The hinged lid is richly decorated with geometric borders, scrolling foliate motifs and a central classical figural scene depicting figures in an antique-inspired setting. The front is further embellished with an elaborate symmetrical design incorporating two birds, a central lyre and scrolling foliage. The box stands on a projecting wooden plinth with turned feet.
The interior is fitted with four graduated, individually removable/sliding wooden trays, each with a fluted surface, providing a distinctive and practical arrangement for storing cigarettes or tobacco-related items.
The box displays attractive natural ageing and patination consistent with its period, including minor surface marks and wear commensurate with age. The decorative elements remain particularly well preserved.
Period: Victorian, circa 1850–1880
Origin: Probably English
Material: Wood with decorative marquetry/inlaid ornament
Dimensions: 17cm x 13cm x 9.5cm
Condition: Good antique condition, with age-related wear and minor imperfections.
An unusual and highly decorative Victorian cigarette box, notable for its elaborate ornamentation, classical imagery and unusual four-tier fitted interior.
