With this square-format work, Medsan brings Doraemon and Nobita Nobi, the two heroes of Fujiko F. Fujio's manga, into Gustav Klimt's golden age. The robot cat from the 22nd century and his young ward sit side by side on a golden carpet, exactly like the entwined figures in the Kiss or the Frieze of the Stoclet Frieze, wrapped in an ornamental cloak that absorbs them. The cartouche メドサン signs the work at the bottom right, in the manner of a Japanese atelier seal.

The treatment gilds the entire surface with gold leaf, with its creases, matte glints and irregular reflections, on which coppery spirals, concentric discs and emerald green and blood-red spots typical of Vienna in 1907 rest. Doraemon's body becomes a stained-glass window of blue-green organic shapes, while Nobita's silhouette fills with ochre swirls and stylized floral motifs. Around them, the gold is structured by seigaiha, traditional Japanese waves, cherry blossoms and seedings of floating gadgets — bell, Take-copter helicopter, spiral candy — treated as heraldic symbols. The black line of the manga, clean and continuous, cuts through this precious material and preserves the graphical identity of the characters.

The juxtaposition is truer than it seems: Klimt already drew on japonisme, kimonos and lacquers, and Medsan returns the favor by gilding two icons of Japanese culture. Gold, in Klimt, sacralizes the intimate; here it sacralizes a childhood friendship, that of a clumsy boy and the benevolent machine watching over him. The result transforms a scene from a daily television series into a Byzantine icon, where ordinary tenderness is given the value of a altarpiece.

A sunny and ornamental piece, ideal for adding a touch that is at once precious and joyful to a collector's interior devoted to the dialogue between Viennese art and Japanese pop culture.
