Description from the seller
This striking graphic work by Richard Ryan presents a glamorous female figure against a highly stylised New York City backdrop. Recognisable elements such as the city streets, yellow taxi, school bus, skyscrapers and St. Patrick’s Cathedral are combined with bold blocks of red, blue, grey and yellow. The strong graphic composition gives the work a distinctive Pop Art-inspired and contemporary New York character.
Richard Ryan de Cuevas (born 1974) is a Swedish artist and photographer, born in Santiago, Chile. He developed an early interest in painting and drawing before later concentrating on photography. His artistic practice combines photography, graphic design and fine art, creating highly stylised images of people, fashion and urban environments.
Richard Ryan became particularly recognised for his graphic New York works. His Manhattan Art Portfolio, produced in 2007, consists of twelve New York motifs based largely on photographs he took during a trip to New York in 2005. The series combines influences from early 20th-century posters, Pop Art and realistic painting, with Edward Hopper cited as an important inspiration.
His New York graphic works have been sold through Scandinavian auction houses, including Bukowskis, where his signed and numbered serigraphs from the Manhattan Art Portfolio have been offered.
