Description from the seller
Ropp Grand Luxe – French briar pipe with original horn stem – ca. 1930–1940
A particularly beautiful and characterful Ropp Grand Luxe, manufactured in France and equipped with an original horn stem with a metal tenon.
This exact combination makes the pipe interesting. Based on the model, construction, the horn stem and the metal tenon, this piece can most probably be dated to the period ca. 1930–1940. This makes it around 85–95 years old now.
The pipe has been carefully restored while preserving its original character. The bowl has been relimed and cleaned, the briar sanded, refinished and polished again, and finally given a coat of carnauba wax. This brings the warm, deep reddish-brown color of the wood beautifully back to life, without giving the pipe the appearance of a brand-new piece.
The smoke channels have also been thoroughly cleaned. Given its age and history of use, a very faint tobacco smell is still perceptible.
The original horn stem has been gently sanded and polished. A few light bite marks remain on the mouthpiece. These were deliberately not further removed or filled: horn does not repair in the same way as vulcanite or acrylic, and a more invasive repair would compromise the original material and the historical character of the pipe.
For a estate pipe of this age, the Ropp is in very good condition, with normal signs of use and aging that suit an authentic piece from this period. The original stamping Ropp – Grand Luxe – is still present. On the other side the model number 8 is stamped.
A fine, fully usable historic pipe, but especially an interesting piece for the collector of classic French estate pipes due to the combination of Ropp, horn and the early construction.
Condition: very good estate condition for the age.
Period: ca. 1930–1940.
Material: briar / horn / metal.
Model 8
Origin: France.
