Description from the seller
Title
Kumi Sugai – “Complex” – Geometric Abstract Print – Edition of 1000 – Unframed
Description
Kumi Sugai (1919–1996) was a prominent Japanese painter and printmaker who became an important figure in the post-war Paris art scene. After moving to France in the 1950s, Sugai developed a distinctive artistic language that evolved from calligraphic abstraction into bold geometric compositions characterized by clean lines, rhythmic forms, and striking color contrasts.
This work, titled “Complex,” exemplifies Sugai’s mature geometric abstraction. The composition combines a crescent-like form, diagonal striped elements, and a vivid green circle, creating a dynamic interplay of geometric shapes and color. The balanced arrangement of primary and secondary colors produces a sense of movement and visual tension characteristic of Sugai’s later works.
The sharp registration and vivid ink colors demonstrate the high quality of the printing technique and faithfully convey Sugai’s distinctive geometric aesthetic.
Sugai’s works are held in major international collections, including The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), New York, and the Centre Pompidou, Paris, and his work remains highly sought after by collectors of post-war European and Japanese abstract art.
