Angelika Platen (born 1942) is among the most important German photographers in the field of artistic portraiture. Since the late sixties she has documented with precision and subtle sensitivity the faces and personalities of the international art scene—from emerging talents to world-famous icons.
Her photographs show artists not only as public figures, but also as people in focused, often intimate moments. Among her most famous portraits are shots of Joseph Beuys, Sigmar Polke, Marina Abramović, Georg Baselitz, Neo Rauch, Ai Weiwei, Wolfgang Tillmans and many others.
Platen tends to work mainly in black and white and relies on natural light and authentic settings—often in the studio, during the work, or in personal situations. Her work has been exhibited in numerous museums and institutions, including the Martin-Gropius-Bau in Berlin, the Hamburger Kunsthalle, and the ZKM in Karlsruhe.
