This photo shows the main character from the groundbreaking documentary film Nanook of the North, directed by Robert J. Flaherty and released in 1922.

The character of Nanook was portrayed by an Inuit man named Allakariallak.

The film is widely considered one of the first feature-length documentary films in cinema history.It captures the traditional life and struggle for survival of an Inuit family in the harsh conditions of the Canadian Arctic.Although classified as a documentary, Flaherty staged
several scenes (including the igloo construction) to showcase traditional practices that were already starting to disappear at the time.
