Description from the seller
Andy Warhol: “Mao, 1972”.
Authorized color offset print.
Condition: the work is in excellent condition.
Size 40 x 40 cm.
Andy Warhol modeled his now iconic portraits of Mao Zedong after the official state portrait of the Chinese communist leader.
Warhol’s Mao transformed a serious portrait of a world leader into a provocative, playful and colorful image, with Mao wearing eyeshadow, blush or lipstick in some versions.
It was Warhol’s regular dealer, Bruno Bischofberger, who first suggested to him to make a portrait of the most important figure of the 20th century. Warhol was fascinated by fame and celebrity culture and had recently read in Life magazine that Mao Zedong was the most famous person in the world.
Mao is one of Warhol’s most popular portraits: The auction record for the work is $47.5 million, sold at a well-known auction house in 2015.
