Character of the work
The Hour Between Tides presents a calm, mood-filled marine space where several sailing ships approach the foreground. Above the water, a full moon dominates, and in the distance, on the shore, a small illuminated building is visible. Golden sails and reflections of light on the water’s surface draw the eye, contrasting with the cool tones of the sky and the dark silhouettes of the surrounding landscape.
A fragmentary, multi-layered structure of the image gives the tranquil landscape a more painterly and almost abstract character. Moonlight, golden glints, and recurring vertical lines build an impression of a moment paused in time.
The approaching sailing ships may evoke ideas of return, reunion, expectancy, or crossing a certain boundary. However, it is not a definite narrative — the work leaves space for the viewer’s own interpretation and for finding personal meaning in it.
