Vintage Japanese Tabako-bon – Wooden Smoking Box with Cast Iron Ashtray & Drawer – Showa Period

A charming vintage Japanese Tabako-bon, a traditional portable smoking accessory, combining a warm-toned wooden body with removable cast-iron fittings.
The upper section contains a decorative cast-iron ashtray or fire-bowl fitting with an openwork removable insert. The iron components feature attractive raised floral and scrolling motifs, giving the piece a distinctive traditional Japanese character.
A small pull-out drawer is incorporated into the lower section and is fitted with a simple metal handle. Originally, such storage could be used for smoking accessories, matches, or other small implements.
The upright wooden carrying handle makes the piece portable and adds to its characteristic Japanese folk-craft appearance.
Today, in addition to its original purpose as a smoking accessory, it can be enjoyed as a decorative Japanese interior object, a small storage box, an incense accessory holder, or a collector’s piece.
The aged wood, dark iron fittings, and natural patina give the object an appealing Wabi-Sabi character.
