Karl Otto Helmer Hultén (1916–2015) was a Swedish painter and printmaker. He was best known as CO Hultén.
Together with Max Walter Svanberg, Anders Österlin, and others, he founded the Imaginisterna group in 1945, whose art had its roots in Surrealism but was influenced by the emerging Informel movement. The Imaginisterna disbanded in 1956. Hultén was also a member of the Cobra group from 1948 to 1951.
His works at that time evoked associations with reality, including frottages, partly inspired by Max Ernst. Earlier, he had been one of the first in Sweden to present purely informal painting, to which he returned during the 1950s.
Starting in 1955, Hultén directed the experimental Galerie Colibri in Malmö and published the magazine *Salamander*, which showcased avant-garde art. His color-intensive, informal painting reached a peak in his brilliant enamel paintings in the early 1960s. Later, inspired by close contact with Black Africa, he reintroduced forms rooted in reality—but with a lingering surreal atmosphere.
