Gustave Asselberg (Amsterdam, September 5, 1938 – Nijmegen, August 4, 1967) was one of the most prominent Dutch artists in the field of images and sculptures that documented the special position of pots within modern art. As a result, there has been substantial development and an experimental oeuvre that is appreciated today for its new characters in the spirit of the times.
Asselberg's work is based on these hybrid works, which combine graphic art with photo collages and are visible everywhere. The materials used lie within the traditional boundaries of the disciplines, and the compositions in the images, where the object and the elements are reinforced, are present throughout. This work is based on a wide range of international developments within the natural art world, including assemblage and collage in mixed media, with a personal and intuitive vision.
Thematically, Asselberg's oeuvre reflects the visual culture of his time—photography, consumption, and the prominent roles played therein. These works are characterized by a wide range of expressive manifestations in the materials used and fit within the experimental current of Dutch modern art.
The abrupt break in Gustave Asselberg's career, according to him, is a less important theme than the Dutch avant-garde in pottery. This work is regarded as a relevant document of a generation of artists who never quite found alignment with the changing world.
