Description from the seller
BLACK-HAT GIRL is a 70x100 cm painting by contemporary artist Ernest García. The work presents a young woman accompanied by a horse, structured as a portrait with strong visual presence in which figure, animal, and floral ornamentation are integrated into an elegant and contemporary composition.
The young woman occupies the center of the scene and looks directly at the viewer. Her large black hat functions as a powerful graphic element that frames the face and contrasts with the light of the skin and the chromatic intensity of the dress. Beside her, the horse's head introduces a serene and monumental presence, reinforcing the relationship between female portrait and the equestrian world. The palette is dominated by pinks, reds, yellows, greens, blacks, and warm earth tones. Ernest García uses color freely and expressively, moving away from a strictly naturalistic representation. The floral dress dialogues with the large flowers in the background, creating continuity between figure and environment, while the black of the hat and the dark details provide structure and depth.
The brushwork is visible, swift and confident, with a combination of more defined areas —especially in the face and the horse— and others resolved through broad, gestural patches. This synthesis brings freshness and connects the work with Fauvist tradition and with certain contemporary figuration of a decorative and expressive character.
The girl with the black hat shares visual affinities with Henri Matisse in the prominence of color, the use of floral motifs, and the simplification of shapes. Echoes of the modern tradition of the female portrait and of a certain equestrian iconography reinterpreted from a current sensibility can also be perceived, more intimate and stylized than narrative. The atmosphere blends elegance, serenity, and a slight sense of mystery. The frontal gaze of the young woman, the large hat, and the horse's proximity create an image of strong character, while the flowers add a more lyrical and ornamental dimension.
The Black-Hat Girl will be especially appealing to collectors interested in contemporary figurative painting, female portraiture, horses in art, equestrian scenes, Fauvism, Henri Matisse, floral painting, expressive colorism, and Spanish contemporary art. Its balance between portrait, animal, and ornamentation gives it a very marked visual identity and notable appeal for collection and auction.
