A refined and elegant pair of hexagonal vases in Japanese Satsuma ceramic, dating to the late Meiji period or early Taishō period (early 1900s).
The vases feature an interesting and uncommon six-faced (hexagonal) faceted shape. The ceramic body bears the classic ivory/cream glaze finely crazed (craquelure), typical of high-quality Satsuma production.
The painted decoration is entirely hand-done with a splendid continuous motif depicting a grove of bamboo (take), a traditional Asian symbol of strength, prosperity and flexibility. The leaves and culms are rendered with delicate shades of green and brown, enriched with gold gilding.
The vases are paired with their original/period wooden bases, carved and dark, custom-made to cradle the vase foot and enhance stability and display appeal.
