Description from the seller
LA SILLA NEGRA is a 70x100 cm painting by contemporary artist Ernest García. The work presents a serene and luminous interior built around a simple black chair placed beside a small side table and several indoor plants. The scene transforms a daily corner into a composition with strong chromatic presence, where light, furniture, and vegetation generate an intimate, balanced, and deeply contemplative atmosphere.
The composition is organized around a clear verticality. On the left, a turquoise door or panel occupies a large part of the background and establishes a striking contrast with the large yellow and orange surface that appears in the upper right area. In the center, the black chair acts as the visual axis, accompanied by a small stool on which rest a cup and a plant. This combination of simple elements creates a orderly and silent scene, with a strong sense of pause.
The vegetation introduces rhythm and freshness into the interior. Several pots with broad-leaved plants are distributed at different levels, generating a very balanced relationship between organic shapes and architectural geometry. The dark greens of the leaves dialogue with the turquoise of the door and with the warm tones of the floor, reinforcing the depth and visual richness of the work. Color is one of Ernest García’s main expressive resources. The turquoises, blues, yellows, and oranges coexist with the black of the chair and with the greens of the plants, creating a luminous and modern harmony. The large yellow zone seems to receive intense light that projects into the interior and generates a warm, almost Mediterranean atmosphere. The contrast between cool and warm tones adds dynamism without breaking the overall serenity of the scene.
The brushwork is visible and direct, with surfaces resolved through broad and confident gestures. The architecture is built with simple lines and well-defined color planes, while the plants are painted with greater freedom and brushstroke variation. The chair and the table, with dark silhouettes, provide structure and balance against the walls’ luminosity.
The work maintains affinities with fauvism for its chromatic freedom and for the importance of color as an emotional element. Echoes of Henri Matisse can also be appreciated in the relationship between interior, furniture, vegetation, and large color areas, as well as a certain sensitivity close to Pierre Bonnard in transforming a domestic scene into an intimate and luminous experience. These references function as visual affinities within a contemporary language of their own. Beyond representing a corner of a house, La silla negra conveys a sense of calm, waiting, and everyday life. The absence of human figures makes the furniture and objects take on a nearly narrative presence: the cup, the small plant, and the chair seem to suggest that someone has just left the place or is about to return. This sense of absent presence adds a poetic and silent dimension to the work.
La silla negra will be especially appealing to collectors interested in contemporary figurative painting, colorful interiors, art furniture, houseplants, domestic scenes, fauvism, Henri Matisse, Pierre Bonnard, luminous painting, and Spanish contemporary art. Its balance between simplicity, chromatic intensity, and intimate atmosphere makes it a work of great visual presence and notable appeal for auction.
