With this square-format artwork, Medsan places side by side the two most emblematic guardians of American comics: Batman, the Dark Knight of Gotham created by Bob Kane and Bill Finger for DC Comics, and Spider-Man, the New York web-slinger by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko for Marvel. The encounter is treated as a copper repoussé bas-relief, in the tradition of metalwork and Art Deco architectural filigree. The red cartouche メドサン, the artist’s signature in katakana, sits at the bottom right like a Japanese workshop seal.

The entire surface is repoussé and chiseled: the hammered background vibrates with a regular cupping pattern, while the swirls of clouds, sculpted in flats, borrow their spirals from Hokusai’s wave and the cloud motifs of Japanese folding screens. Batman is modeled in high relief, crouched on a Neo-Gothic gargoyle, his cape unfurled in deep drapery reminiscent of cathedral sculpture; Spider-Man, suspended by his web, stands out in red enamel on a brown-terracotta background patinated with verdigris. The city’s skyscrapers, the Empire State Building at the forefront, are engraved in very shallow relief, almost champlevé, to deepen the depth.

The dialogue is that of two nocturnes that oppose each other: Gotham’s heavy, mineral verticality versus Manhattan’s acrobatic lightness, the stone gargoyle against the silk thread. By casting them in the same patinated metal, Medsan treats them as icons of a altarpiece, as if superhero mythology had already joined the monumental repertoire. The color, reserved for the spider costume alone, designates movement and life in a world frozen in bronze.

A dense, sculptural piece, ideal for bringing a touch of metallic matter and contemporary myth to an interior of a collector attached to pop culture icons.
