Description from the seller
ISTANBUL is a 70x100 cm painting by contemporary artist Ernest García. The work presents a scene with a strong atmospheric and orientalist charge in which a female figure dressed in black, placed in the foreground, contemplates from a dim interior the monumental silhouette of a great mosque. The contrast between the darkness of the near space and the intense yellow sky turns the image into a theatrical, evocative, and mysteriously charged composition.
The composition revolves around a large arch that functions as a frame within the painting. Through it, the city appears, built with domes, minarets, and architectural volumes simplified in blues, light blues, and small orange accents. The female figure occupies the right side and, although treated almost like a silhouette, she acquires great emotional presence. Her contemplative attitude introduces a narrative dimension that transforms the urban landscape into an intimate experience. Color plays an essential role. Ernest García contrasts an intensely yellow background with deep blues, blacks, and oranges, creating a visually striking combination. Istanbul’s architecture is bathed in an unreal and vibrant light, more emotional than descriptive. This chromatic freedom connects the work with Fauvist and expressionist traditions, where color is used to intensify the atmosphere and not only to reproduce reality.
The brushwork is visible, direct, and gestural. Architectural details are synthesized through masses and vertical lines, while the ornamental elements in the foreground are resolved with quick strokes in blue and orange. This economy of means reinforces the graphic strength of the work and allows the strong contrast between figure, arch, and horizon to dominate the visual reading. The work maintains affinities with Orientalist tradition, though reinterpreted from a contemporary sensibility. One can also perceive echoes of Henri Matisse in the interest in the Islamic world, ornamentation, and chromatic exaltation, as well as a certain Expressive resonance in the reduction of the human figure to a dark, symbolic presence. These references function as visual echoes within an own language.
Beyond representing a view of Istanbul, the painting speaks of distance, contemplation, and fascination with the city. The figure seems suspended before a luminous vision, almost as if observing a memory or a dreamed landscape. Religious architecture, the great arch, and the intensity of the sky build an atmosphere between the spiritual, the traveler, and the cinematic.
Istanbul will be especially attractive to collectors interested in contemporary figurative painting, urban landscapes, Islamic architecture, mosques, reinterpretations of Orientalism, Fauvism, Henri Matisse, expressive painting, travel scenes, and Spanish contemporary art. Its strong chromatic contrast, its theatrical composition, and its mysterious atmosphere make it a work of great visual presence and notable appeal for auction.
