Description from the seller
LOOKING AT THE BLUE is a 70x100 cm painting by contemporary artist Ernest García. The work presents a female figure with her back turned, leaning on a balustrade and paused in front of a wide turquoise surface that functions as visual and emotional horizon. The seemingly simple scene conveys an intense sense of stillness, introspection, and contemplation, built through a refined composition and a very expressive use of color.
The figure occupies the center of the image and becomes the absolute axis of the composition. Her relaxed pose, with the body slightly leaning forward and legs crossed, introduces natural elegance and a certain sense of waiting. The fact that the face remains hidden reinforces the open and suggestive character of the scene: the viewer does not know exactly what the protagonist is observing, but shares with her that moment of silence. Color is one of the main protagonists of the work. Ernest García contrasts the intense red of the blouse with the large blue-green background, while the pants in pale blue and green tones act as a transition zone between the two ranges. The ochres, pinks, and oranges of the lower architecture add warmth and balance to the composition. This combination of complementary colors generates a clean, modern image with great visual strength.
The brushwork is visible, loose, and confident, especially in the clothing and in the background surfaces. The figure is built through broad patches and simplified planes of color, avoiding excessive detail and favoring immediate reading. This formal synthesis connects the work with Fauvism and with a certain contemporary figuration interested in the relationship between figure, color, and space. In Looking South one can perceive affinities with Henri Matisse for color intensity and the simplification of forms, as well as echoes of the modern tradition of portraits painted from behind, where the figure acts as an intermediary between the viewer and the landscape. There is also a sensibility close to depictions of Mediterranean scenes and to certain contemporary compositions with a cinematic quality.
The absence of explicit narrative elements allows the painting to preserve a poetic and universal quality. The woman seems to observe something located beyond the frame, turning the title into an invitation to imagine the landscape, the climate, and the moment. The work speaks of travel, distance, waiting, and contemplation, but also of the pleasure of stopping and looking.
Looking South will be especially appealing to collectors interested in contemporary figurative painting, female figures, women’s backs, Mediterranean scenes, Fauvism, Henri Matisse, colorful painting, minimalist composition, atmosphere art, and Spanish contemporary art. Its balance between formal simplicity, chromatic intensity, and introspective dimension gives it notable appeal for auction.
