Description from the seller
RETRATO INTERIOR is a 70x100 cm painting by contemporary artist Ernest García. The work features a woman seated indoors, resting her face on one hand while looking straight and serenely at the viewer. In the foreground, a cup of coffee and an open notebook introduce a everyday, intimate dimension, turning the scene into a portrait of pause, reflection and interior life.
The composition concentrates on the female figure, who occupies almost the entire pictorial space. Her relaxed posture, slightly leaning forward, creates closeness and a sense of quiet conversation. The diagonal table organizes the foreground and guides the gaze from the objects to the face. The deep green background, barely interrupted by a lateral red stripe, eliminates distractions and reinforces the protagonist’s psychological presence.
Color plays a fundamental role. Ernest García contrasts the deep blue of the clothing and hair with the bright green of the background, adding reds, oranges and warm tones to the skin and furniture. This combination of saturated and complementary colors gives the work a clear Fauvist energy, where chromatic intensity is used to build character and emotion rather than to reproduce reality in strictly naturalistic terms. The brushwork is visible, direct and confident. The face is built with simplified color planes, greens, pinks and ochres shaping the features expressively, while the hair and clothing are resolved with large masses of blue and black. The notebook and the cup, treated with greater synthesis, function as small narrative elements suggesting reading, writing, study or a moment of rest.
The work bears affinities with modern portraiture and with Fauvism, especially in the freedom of color and in formal simplification. Echoes of Henri Matisse and Alexej von Jawlensky can be perceived in the way expression is enhanced through large color fields and firm contours, understood as visual references within a contemporary language of its own.
Beyond the physical representation of the protagonist, Retrato interior conveys introspection, serenity and a certain reflective attitude. The frontal gaze contrasts with the relaxed gesture of the body, creating a subtle tension between presence and thought. The cup and notebook reinforce the sense of a private moment paused in time.
Retrato interior will be especially attractive to collectors interested in contemporary figurative painting, female portrait, interior scenes, women reading or writing, Fauvism, Henri Matisse, Jawlensky, expressive painting, modern colorism and Spanish contemporary art. Its chromatic intensity, direct composition and psychological dimension give it notable appeal for collection and auction.
