Villafuerte's original Checkmate, a mixed media and acrylic painting on canvas (82 × 130 cm, 2026), hand signed, in excellent condition, created in Spain and sold direct from the artist.
Description from the seller
Checkmate
A predominantly black-and-white composition built around tension, contrast and shifting structures. Layered marks, fragments and gestural passages move across the surface, creating a space where control and spontaneity continually collide.
Following the artist’s recent work The Gambler, Checkmate continues an exploration of chance, choice and the uncertain territory of lived experience. Here, the metaphor shifts from the wager to the position itself—the moment when the possible moves begin to narrow, and control becomes increasingly difficult to distinguish from circumstance.
The work is not a depiction of a chessboard, but a reflection on the larger game we find ourselves inside: the decisions we make, the forces we cannot control, and the moments when we are forced to reconsider what the next move might be.
A small green mark interrupts the otherwise restrained palette, while fragments, grids and accumulated gestures create a surface that balances order against disruption.
Medium: Mixed media and acrylic on canvas
Size: 82 × 130 cm
Style: Abstract Expressionism / Contemporary Abstract
