The book Die Abwehr (German for "The Defense") from 1938 is a military-theoretical work in which Wilhelm Ritter von Leeb argues that defensive operations are a crucial and equal component of warfare. He thus ran directly counter to the doctrine of Blitzkrieg that prevailed at the time and the focus on purely offensive tactics within the Wehrmacht.

The work was originally published in the military journal Militärwissenschaftliche Rundschau before it appeared in book form in 1938. Although Adolf Hitler's regime initially ignored its defensive theories, the book was later regarded by military strategists worldwide (including in the United States under the title Defense) as a classic in military literature.
