Gerdes was an important German painter, sculptor, photographer, and art theorist known for his profound exploration of artistic autonomy and the function of art in public spaces. Trained at the art academies of Münster and Düsseldorf, where he was a student of the renowned Gerhard Richter, he questioned contemporary art's dependence on traditional museums, arguing that creation should be usefully and realistically integrated into everyday human environments.
