Description from the seller
Marc Eemans: Composition
Woodcut on paper, signed and numbered lower left "Marc Eemans.Framed with yellow passepartout (35 x 35 x 4 cm).
A figurative composition by the Belgian artist and poet Marc Eemans: within a ruled black border, a nude male figure seen from behind carries a second, limp nude body across his shoulders, moving through a stylised landscape of still water, bare saplings and banded clouds. The bold black contour, the flat patterning of water and sky and the mythic, elegiac mood are characteristic of Eemans's early graphic work, in which the influence of Flemish modernism and of German Romanticism is distilled into a spare, symbolist idiom — the "gnostic" imagery that runs through his art and poetry.
Marc Eemans (Dendermonde 1907 – Brussels 1998) was a Belgian painter, poet, art historian and critic. He began with a constructivist-abstract sensibility before turning, around 1925, to the orbit of Surrealism, exhibiting alongside René Magritte and Salvador Dalí. From the 1930s he moved away from abstraction toward a personal, symbolist mysticism, developing the visionary imagery for which he is best known. His works are held in collections including the Museum of Fine Arts, Ghent, and the Print Room in Brussels.
La Lune en Rodage is the three-volume collective portfolio assembled by the Basel-based publisher, psychoanalyst and collector Carl Laszlo (Pécs 1923 – Basel 2013), issued by Edition Panderma, Basel, in 1960, 1965 and 1977. The three volumes gather a total of some 180 original works and form a dense survey of the European avant-garde between the 1950s and the 1970s. Several of the included works mark turning points in the careers of the artists involved: Enrico Castellani's sheet is regarded as his first documented graphic work, and Piero Manzoni's Achrome as the only multiple the artist ever realised.
Condition: mint archival condition. Framed with yellow, self-made passepartout (non professional).
Provenance: Edition Panderma, Carl Laszlo, Basel — Private Collection, Basel.
